When uninsured patients cannot pay for the care they receive, healthcare providers raise the prices they charge health insurance companies to recoup these losses. The insurance companies in turn pass the costs along to their policy-holders. It is estimated that in 2008, insured families paid an extra $1,270 in health insurance premiums to cover the costs of the uninsured (PolitiFact.com).
This does not mean, however, that the uninsured are receiving the care they need. Between 2000 and 2006, about 137,000 people died because they did not have health insurance and did not get the care they needed (Dorn, 2008).
